MMPDS 17

BACKGROUND

MMPDS stands for Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization. MMPDS Technical Coordination is a collaborative industry and government process that uses consistent and reliable methods to collect, analyze and present statistically based allowable properties of materials and fasteners. allowed properties.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE MMPDS

The MMPDS manual, successor to MIL-HDBK-5, is the primary source for statistically based allowable properties of metallic materials and fasteners used in civil and military aircraft systems around the world. It is recognized and used by engineers around the world to ensure designs made from metallic materials meet airworthiness specifications for civil and military aircraft systems.

CONTENTS OF THE MMPDS

The MMPDS manual contains tables of mechanical properties and allowable values for tension, compression, shear and joint properties. Other properties included in the guide include the effects of temperature on properties, shear toughness and allowable values for fasteners. The MMPDS manual is regularly updated to ensure that:

  • Reliable, statistically sound design properties are available as many mature materials and/or product forms as possible
  • the current statistical design properties are validated or updated for older “alloys”
  • Other supporting data (fatigue, crack growth, fracture fracture toughness, temperature influence).
  • Recently canceled specifications are marked.

MMPDS ORGANIZATION

The MMPDS organization consists of a Secretariat, a Government Steering Group (GSG) and an Industry Steering Group (ISG), which play an important role, and subordinate component-oriented steering groups working through a general coordinating committee to lead the working groups. Battelle has been a secretary since 1954 since 1954 and serves as an impartial data controller. The GSG is made up of representatives from the FAA and other government agencies that help fund the MMPDS.
